Face-to-face with anticipated stock shortages for the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony Interactive Entertainment has instituted a strict lottery purchasing system in Japan that rewards the platform’s most dedicated users.

According to the official purchase requirements published on the Sony Store Japan application portal, prospective buyers must hold a Japanese PlayStation Network account and prove they have logged at least 60 hours of total gameplay across PS4 or PS5 hardware between September 27, 2024, and September 27, 2026. The lottery will automatically trigger to distribute available inventory whenever application volume surpasses unit supply.

Besides serving as a practical anti-scalping measure, it also highlights a broader strategic pivot within Sony.

The move aligns directly with recent statements from Sony Group CEO Hiroki Totoki, who confirmed that the company is shifting focus away from hardware acquisition and toward maximizing recurring revenue from its existing userbase. Pointing to PlayStation’s massive ecosystem of over 125 million monthly active users, Totoki noted that with the PS5 entering the latter half of its lifecycle, monetization through software, digital add-ons, and PlayStation Plus subscriptions takes priority over blindly chasing new platform adopters.

Viewed through that lens, restricting supply to high-engagement players is a calculated effort to solidify brand loyalty. This strategy prioritizes distributing hardware directly into the hands of users who already spend significant time (and money) within the PlayStation ecosystem.
