The team behind Skyblivion says a former volunteer is threatening legal action over their contributions, even after the project removed and replaced their code.

In a statement accompanying a new video, the developers said the disagreement began after the contributor departed and access to their original source code was revoked.

According to the team, it decompiled parts of that work—turning existing software into code it could inspect—to fix problems and maintain systems already built into the project. The former volunteer objected.

The developers say they consulted legal counsel and believe they had the right to maintain the submitted code. Nevertheless, they decided to replace it to protect volunteers from further stress.

“In good faith we removed their code, rebuilding and improving the system from the ground up,” the statement reads.

The team alleges that the legal threats included demands for volunteer leads’ real names and home addresses, which it considered disproportionate. It says the threats have continued despite the replacement.

The statement doesn’t identify the former contributor or confirm that a lawsuit has been filed. It also asks supporters to avoid targeting them.

“Please don’t make this a witch-hunt,” the team wrote.

Skyblivion is a volunteer-built remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion within Skyrim: Special Edition. It recreates Cyrodiil’s quests, characters and locations, alongside redesigned dungeons and environments.

The mod will be free, although players will need to own Skyrim: Special Edition and Oblivion Game of the Year Deluxe through Steam or GOG. Console versions aren’t supported.

The project’s FAQ currently lists a 2026 release target following its earlier delay from 2025, with no specific launch date announced.
